In the heart of Alberta’s wilderness, a leading North American energy company entrusted Paradox with an extraordinary mission — constructing an access road over deep muskeg. This road would allow crews to access a compressor station crucial to their operations. The densely forested area with deep muskeg terrain presented challenging obstacles. The closest access point was a staggering 11.4 km away, making helicopter the sole viable means of entry.

Paradox teamed up with engineering partner Stratum Logics to design a comprehensive access solution that would provide access while preserving the delicate wetlands. Over a three-month period, the dedicated crews worked tirelessly, fueled by a collaborative spirit, improvisation, and solidarity to executethe solution flawlessly.

In a race against time, the team laid 79,800 square meters of Tough Cell® geocells. Braving drastic weather changes and unforeseen hurdles, the team regrouped time and again, returning to the drawing board with unwavering determination. They harnessed a wealth of expertise to provide end-to-end engineering, matting, and civil earthworks services that led to the project’s ultimate success!

THE PROBLEM

The client’s only reliable means of access were helicopter charters (incurring substantial cost over the years). The absence of road access in the event of an emergency was a growing safety concern.

The sole access route was only usable during select periods and crossed through an environmentally sensitive area with deep muskeg.

 

This constrained the client’s access, and impeded their capacity to serve their customers and expand their operations. Frustration peaked and the energy giant sought Paradox’s expertise. The team meticulously assessed the situation and tackled the problem head on. The optimal solution, designed to minimize the disruption to the wetlands and support heavy loads for years to come used Paradox’s innovative Tough Cell® cellular confinement technology.

In strategic collaboration, Paradox and Stratum Logics applied
advanced engineering to build a sustainable access road solution to meet the client’s needs. Spanning challenging deep muskeg, this meticulously designed road incorporated two layers of state-of-the-art Tough Cell® technology, filled with locally sourced sand
and gravel.

Tough Cell® enabled a build that is durable, permanent, and
environmentally friendly. This innovative solution resulted in
significant cost savings for the client and surpassed their expectations, underscoring the effectiveness of Paradox’s commitment to excellence.
